| For Undecided Iowa Caucus Voters, It’s About Jobs Posted: 03 Jan 2012 01:54 AM PST ‘I want somebody who can do more than just speak the rhetoric,’ Iowan tells MTV News, as poll finds 41 percent still selecting a candidate.
URBANDALE, IOWA — You’ve heard a lot about the 99 percent, but not nearly as much about the 41 percent. That’s the amount of voters Monday’s (January 2) final polling found had still not made up their minds about who they are going to vote for in the Iowa caucus on Tuesday night. “Iowans uniquely have a chance to go out and meet the candidates, and listen to them talk. … Each candidate has had a chance to be at the top of the polls, but none of the polls represent the 100,000 or so Iowans that will vote tomorrow night,” Jeremy Danilson said about the multiple opportunities voters in his state have to get face time with candidates in the first-in-the-nation primary. “I think everyone’s taking their time, wants to make the best choice that they can.” Danilson, 28, has lived in Iowa most of his life, but is participating in his first caucus Tuesday after becoming more engaged in politics during his final two years in law school. Like a lot of young voters in Iowa, he’s taking the plunge after being inspired by real-life issues that are affecting his life now that he’s out of school. “I’m personally leaning towards Newt Gingrich right now,” said Danilson, who has attended two debates in Iowa and met a number of candidates face-to-face more than once, including Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Senator Rick Santorum, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Rep. Ron Paul, Texas Governor Rick Perry, as well as Gingrich, with whom he’s had two intimate, sit-down meetings in a small student group. “I feel like he actually understands where we are historically and where we need to go and uniquely has the ability to implement the change he’s talking about.” Danilson’s wife, Sara, 23, a waitress at the suburban OverTime sports bar, just finished her undergraduate degree and is actively looking for a full-time job as well. She said she got wrapped up in caucus fever because of Jeremy, but unlike her husband, with just over 24 hours to go, she had not yet decided which candidate is getting her vote. “This is probably the first time I’ve really paid attention to what’s going on as far as politics,” she said of why the 2012 caucus has grabbed her attention. “I’m purely basing my decision off of the caucuses. I don’t have a set candidate. There’s nobody I’m really impressed with at this time. “I’m excited to hear what people are going to say,” she continued. “It’s not going to be people working for the campaign. It’s going to be real people, real Iowans, expressing how they feel about the candidates.” For Sara, who graduated in April with a B.A. in business administration, issue #1 is jobs. Specifically, what the GOP candidates will do to help her find one. “I’ve been applying to about everything,” she said. “At first, I was kind of picky, and then I was just, ‘Click, apply, click, apply,’ because I can’t find anything.” The couple both have student loans to start paying back soon, and they’re looking for a candidate who will address the job situation and give them hope for paying off a mountain of debt that could easily overwhelm them if they can’t find employment soon. “Jobs is huge,” said Jeremy, who is studying for his bar exam and working hard to find a job before he must start making loan payments in April. “I initially thought an undergrad degree would guarantee me a job. That’s not the case, as Sara’s struggling with that. Law school doesn’t guarantee you a job either.” The time for stump speeches is over as far as Sara is concerned, and her night-of decision at a local high school auditorium will come down to the closing arguments from her friends and neighbors about the candidate they think can lead the country. “The other thing is: I want somebody who can do more than just speak the rhetoric,” Jeremy added about the nasty rhetoric that has filled the air, along with copious attack ads, in Iowa. “I need to believe that the candidate can actually accomplish what they’re talking about.” Sara said she liked the tax plans for both Gingrich and Romney after doing research on the candidates’ websites, while Jeremy said balancing the federal budget was another huge issue for him. “Sara and I, we can only spend the money that we make,” he said. “Why doesn’t the [federal] government have to do that also? When I do get a job, I don’t want to pay half my income in taxes.” MTV is on the scene in Iowa! DES MOINES, IOWA — There’s a very good reason that long-serving Texas Congressman and Tea Party Godfather Ron Paul has rocketed up the ranks in this crucial early caucus state: passion. Specifically, the kind of wide-eyed enthusiasm and dedication he inspires in young first-time caucusers like Carl Bisenius and his friends. “I’ve made my decision and I’m going to vote for Ron Paul,” said Bisenius, 19, of neighboring Ankeny, Iowa. “Mostly because he seems the most honest. He’s got the best record out of all of them and I really agree with everything he says.” Bisenius said he’s been absorbing as much information as he can about the Republicans vying for the nomination while volunteering at a Paul call center in his hometown and he’s convinced that the libertarian fire starter is the one who can beat President Obama. “A lot of people are sick of politicians lying all the time, and he’s one of the only honest politicians left,” said Bisenius. As he huddled around a table on Sunday night at Mullet’s, a beer and burgers joint in the shadow of the state capitol in downtown Des Moines, Bisenius’ confidence was bolstered by some cold, hard facts from friend Jay Fieser, 20, of Iowa City. A political science major the University of Iowa, Fieser said he paid “a bit” of attention to the 2008 election in which Paul also ran and has since learned enough about early 20th century foreign policy that he believes Rep. Paul is the man for the job. “I think it would be interesting to see the United States going back to some kind of policies like that … ending the policing of the world,” said Fieser about Paul’s non-interventionist arguments. As he spoke, an endless barrage of commercials from candidates Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry flashed by on the bar’s flat screen TVs as the top candidates made a final, furious push to woo Hawkeye State voters. “His foreign policy is what really drew me to him … I don’t like the two-party system here and he doesn’t seem heavily invested in the Republican Party and they don’t seem to like him that much. People are saying if he gets elected there will be a reshuffling of the parties and I’d like to see that.” Paul has drawn attention for a number of his beliefs, inlcuding not intervening in international conflicts, voting against the Iraq war, withdrawing from the United Nations, rejecting amnesty for illegal aliens and eliminating such federal government agencies as the Departments of Education, Energy, Commerce and IRS. And, in some ways, Fieser said it is precisely because the rank-and-file of the GOP and the mainstream media have ignored or ridiculed Dr. Paul that he is so interested in the former obstetrician’s views. “People are kind of sick of what’s been going on in Washington for so long … I think they’re really staring to look at Ron Paul because of that,” he said. It is one of Paul’s more radical ideas — returning the U.S. to the gold standard — that caught the eye of first-time caucuser Daniel Swenson, 18. “He seems to be the really only candidate that his voting record reflects his policies and principles he stands for. That’s what really draws me to him,” he said, citing Paul’s claims that returning to the standard the country abandoned in 1933 in order to emerge from the Great Depression could help turn around our current economic crisis. Like his friends, Danielson said he planned to do his part in the days leading up to Tuesday’s vote by talking to his family and other undecided voters about Paul’s policies and trying to sway them to cast a vote for the second-time presidential candidate. Tom Cruise’s domination of the holidays continued as “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” remained the #1 movie at the box office, taking in $31.3 million over the New Year’s weekend. The fourth entry in the action franchise made an estimated $134 million in just 17 days, which is about what “Mission: Impossible III” made during its entire theatrical run. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” was the runner-up in the box office race, collecting $22.1 million during its second weekend in theaters for $132.1 million total. Robert Downey Jr.’s second outing as the famous detective of classic literature carried an estimated production budget of $90 million. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,” the third movie in the series, came in third on the New Year’s box office scorecard. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” jumped 45 percent from last weekend with $18.3 million for a $94.6 million total, which is about $45 million behind where the first “Alvin and the Chipmunks” stood at the same point in its run. Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse” was in a close race for the #4 spot with David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” “War Horse” took in an estimated $16.4 million (for a $42.9 million total) while “Dragon Tattoo” earned another $16.8 million, which was a 16 percent increase from the weekend before. The first American adaptation of the popular Swedish novel has made a total of $57.1 million. Filmmaker Cameron Crowe’s “We Bought a Zoo” was #5 with $14.3 million for a $41.8 million total. Garry Marshall’s critically reviled ensemble rom-com “New Year’s Eve” doubled its previous weekend, thanks no doubt to the arrival of the holiday for which it’s named. The follow-up to “Valentine’s Day” has made just $46.4 million since its release, however, and 93 percent of film critics panned the flick, according to film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Looking back at the 2011 box office, the final “Harry Potter” film was #1 overall with its $381 million gross. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” was just behind with $352.3 million. Rounding out the top five were “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ ($275.4 million), “The Hangover Part II” ($254.4 million) and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” ($241 million). Katy Perry and Russell Brand might have decided to announce their divorce over the weekend for a good reason. Celebrity-news experts explain to MTV News why celebs choose to make big announcements on holidays. David Caplan, a celebrity-news editor who has worked at People and Star, noted that confirming separations during a busy time falls under “PR 101.” “Burying a celeb split over a holiday is a time-honored celeb tradition, really kicked off by Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey back in the day, when they finally split and announced it the night before Thanksgiving,” he explained. “It’s a smart tactical move on their end, as it gets buried a bit because of all the year-end news.” See a timeline of Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s relationship. Caplan added that it’s not just about a slower news cycle, but also a slower work schedule for those in the celebrities’ inner circle and those who get paid to follow celeb news. “From a logistics point of view, news outlets, particularly the celebrity media, are either shut down or working with a skeletal staff, so pursuing the story and advancing it is difficult since it simply means there are less reporters available to dig further and to disseminate the story to the public,” he noted. “Plus, celeb publicists are typically not too available over a holiday, which makes getting info harder for the journalist, which means less gets disseminated to the public. “And the less that gets disseminated to the public, particularly anything that Katy or Russell’s publicists didn’t send out, the happier Katy and Russell are, since they’re, in a way, controlling the flow and content of information about their split to the public.” While more details begin to leak from inside their now-defunct relationship, one expert explained that it’s only a matter of time before even more specifics come out. “Holidays are always the time when celebs think they bury bad news, but those days are over,” explained Rob Shuter, columnist for HuffPost Celebrity. “Now the news cycle is 24/7, 365 days a year. I’m sure over the next few weeks, we will all know exactly what went wrong.” Perry and Brand announced their split Friday, after one year of marriage. Steven Tyler on American Idol was Rolling Stone’s #9 of their “20 Best TV Moments of 2011.” They wrote, “Nobody thought it was possible, but the Aerosmith motormouth held his brain together on live TV…” Yahoo! Music’s 2011 Best New Artists included our Season 10 runner-up, Lauren Alaina, saying, “Alaina arrived…the winsomeness with a hint of an earthy edge was all there in Wildflower, her coming-of-age debut.” In another Yahoo! Music article, “The 40 Best Singles of 2011,” the first American Idol, Kelly Clarkson was included for “I Forgive You.” The author stated, “I can think of a half-dozen tracks from Clarkson’s terrific Stronger album that would have made (and still could be) better singles than the one picked. Posted: 02 Jan 2012 07:07 PM PST Season 3′s 4th place finalist, La Toya London, has her birthday today, and what better way to celebrate than at Casa Dorada in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico?! La Toya is there right now to perform at their New Year’s Eve celebration alongside vocal coach Michael Orland and Idol alumni Michael Johns, Melinda Doolittle, and Rickey Smith. La Toya had a successful run on American Idol and was one of the stand-out contestants of the season. When she was introduced on the show, we learned she was the lead singer in a wedding band. Just weeks later, La Toya was singing solo for an audience of millions.Despite being voted out earlier than some fans expected, La Toya has been successful in the music industry since her time on Idol. In September 2005, La Toya released her debut album, Love & Life. The album received positive reviews from many journalists and landed at #82 on Billboard‘s Top 200 Albums chart and at #27 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. In 2006 and 2007, La Toya released two more singles and had parts in several small musicals. She got her big musical role as Nettie in Oprah Winfrey’s Broadway musical The Color Purple. We’ve watched David grow from a 16-year-old Season 7 Hollywood hopeful to an international star. Last week, during a concert in his hometown, David announced that he has “chosen to serve a full time mission.” Watch the emotional moment in front of a live audience where talks about following his heart. David just wrapped his My Kind of Christmas Tour, his last tour in a while, although he said “I’m not finished yet. I still have some time before I head out on my mission.” On Christmas day, David released his music video for “Wait,” which was shot in Hong Kong in November. Other big performances David has been a part of recently was Forbes’ first-ever holiday concert, and he sang with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on PBS on December 13. Six months after David’s run on American Idol, he released his self-titled debut album, which peaked at No. 2 on three different Billboard charts and was certified Gold by the RIAA. The album included his hit single “Crush” and his second single “A Little Too Not Over You” which David co-wrote. Last October, David released a holiday CD entitled Christmas from the Heart. The album includes 12 Christmas songs covered by David and one original song, “Melodies of Christmas,” that he co-wrote.
