Happy Birthday, LaKisha Jones! Posted: 14 Jan 2012 03:16 AM PST Season 6′s LaKisha Jones celebrates her birthday today. Her big voice was a standout on the very first live episode of the season when she sang Jennifer Holliday’s “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” during the Top 24 performance show. LaKisha, a.k.a. KiKi, continued to soar through the competition and was eliminated during the Top 4 Bee Gees week. Just a month after the Season 6 competition was over, LaKisha released Lakisha Jones – EP. The EP was a collection of her five most downloaded songs that she sang while on American Idol: “This Ain’t a Love Song,” “Stormy Weather,” “Last Dance,” “Diamonds Are Forever,” and “God Bless the Child.” Later that year, LaKisha got to star in The Color Purple on Broadway and she shared the role of Sofia with Chaka Khan! Carrie Underwood’s Foundation Raises Big Money Posted: 14 Jan 2012 03:16 AM PST American Idol Carrie Underwood made wishes come true this holiday season for the schools in her hometown of Checotah, Oklahoma with donations amounting to $350,000 through her C.A.T.S. Foundation – Checotah Animal, Town, and School Foundation. Each of the four schools – Marshall Elementary, Checotah Intermediate School, Checotah Middle School, and Checotah High School – learned just in time for Christmas that they would receive the necessary funds from C.A.T.S. to fulfill various school needs. The donations will go towards items such as new computer labs for each school, plus playground equipment, physical fitness equipment, as well as new band uniforms, furniture, storage, instruments for their music programs, among other items. “Late last year each of the schools created a list of their needs and I am so thrilled that the C.A.T.S. Foundation was able to fund it all,” said Carrie. “It gives me great joy knowing we are helping my hometown schools to offer an even better education to the students. They deserve it.” “We are so proud of Carrie and her accomplishments and we appreciate everything she has done for our students. Every student in our school will benefit from the C.A.T.S. Foundation’s generous donation,” shared Toni Brown, Assistant Superintendent of Checotah Public Schools. In addition, this past October, Carrie’s C.A.T.S. Foundation partnered with national non-profit organization KaBOOM!, and with the help of over 200 local volunteers built a playground in one day at Marshall Elementary School designed by the school’s students. Established in 2009 by country superstar Carrie Underwood, the … read more |

Madonna Praises Lady Gaga’s ‘Rawness’ Posted: 14 Jan 2012 02:37 AM PST Queen of Pop opens up about the Mother Monster on ‘The Graham Norton Show.’
Here in the States, Madonna sat down with ABC News and had some interesting comments about Lady Gaga. In another interview, on Friday’s (January 13) “The Graham Norton Show,” the singer seemed to take the high road and likened her early days of hustling in New York City to Gaga‘s beginnings. “When I first saw her, I saw her performing at a very small club in Manhattan a couple of years ago, maybe it was like three years ago,” she said. “I was actually really impressed by her. I thought she was really cool and she did remind me of me back in the day. I liked her rawness and there was something fresh about there and ballsy, and when she spoke to the audience, she sounded like she had a similar sense of humor to me, quite ironic, and I liked her. So I do think she is very talented.” That was really the end of the subject during their chat, other than when Madonna teased the British talk-show host about naming his dog after her. However, when he said his other dog was named Bailey, she quipped, “Not Gaga?” Some of that sentiment was mirrored in Madge’s ABC interview, the rest of which airs on Friday’s night’s 20/20. While she did call Gaga’s “Born This Way” song “reductive” when asked about comparisons to her own “Express Yourself,” she went on to say that she sees a lot of her own work in Gaga’s. “I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well-done,” she said, later adding that she thinks Gaga is “a very talented artist” and that she’s making a “statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it.” Madonna is currently making the rounds promoting her next album, M.D.N.A., as well as her film “W.E.” What do you think of Madonna’s Gaga thoughts? Nicki Minaj Producers Explain ‘Your Love’ Sample Posted: 14 Jan 2012 02:37 AM PST Pop and Oak faced major sample issues with Pink Friday track, in Mixtape Daily.
Behind the Beats: Pop and Oak Now they’re up for a Grammy thanks to their work on Nicki’s Pink Friday, which is nominated in the Best Rap Album category. Pop, a Philadelphia native, and his production partner, Oak, who hails from Istanbul, Turkey, have been working as a duo since 2008, back when they first produced “Your Love” for a then-emerging Minaj. ” ‘Your Love’ was a song that didn’t make Beam Me Up Scotty, the mixtape,” Pop told Mixtape Daily. Nicki was super-critical of her performance on the song, but after it eventually leaked at the top of 2010, there was no stopping it — well, there was one little obstacle to clear. The original leaked version featured a sample of Annie Lennox’s 1995 version of “No More I Love You’s,” but after the U.K. singer wouldn’t clear the sample, Pop and Oak had to come up with an alternative. “They didn’t let us clear the sample, so the version that leaked wasn’t the version that got on the radio. We ended up re-creating it,” Oak said. The duo redid the sample a little too well, it seemed. Even after the switch-up, Lennox’s lawyers continued to reach out, thinking Nicki’s new version of “Your Love” still incorporated the sample. “They thought what they were hearing on the radio was still the master,” Oak said. “Annie Lennox thought she was hearing herself, which was fly as hell,” Pop added. Vinny’s ‘Jersey Shore’ Anxiety ‘Will Help Others’ Posted: 14 Jan 2012 02:37 AM PST Psychiatrist talks to MTV News after the star left the show on Thursday’s episode to address his lifelong struggle with clinical anxiety.
On Thursday night’s “Jersey Shore,” viewers were given a glimpse inside Vinny Guadagnino’s lifelong (though closely guarded) struggle with clinical anxiety — a battle that finally forced him to leave the show and return home to Staten Island. It was a decidedly somber moment on a show that more often than not focuses solely on good times. But Guadagnino’s condition shouldn’t come as all that much of a shock: according to estimates, 15 to 25 percent of the population suffer from some form of anxiety disorder, and most of the time, those conditions remain undiagnosed. Which is why the “Shore” star going public with his personal struggle is such a big deal. Perhaps by doing so, he will inspire others to do the same. “I was really struck by the honesty and the candor. I didn’t expect that to be on national television,” Dr. Sue Varma, a Manhattan psychiatrist and faculty member at NYU’s Langone Medical Center, told MTV News. “As private as it is, if you’re a public figure like he is, and you’re dealing with an issue, you can bring awareness to it. It will help other people suffering from [an anxiety disorder] to come out without fear of being ostracized. It will get people talking and get people help.” Varma said that many of the thoughts and feelings Guadagnino discussed on the episode are all fairly common to those suffering from an anxiety disorder. And his anxiety was only exacerbated by his hard-charging Seaside Heights surroundings. “You hear Vinny talking about not having his family around, not having a regular sleep schedule, going out a lot, drinking … routine is really big, sleep is huge. For every psychiatric disorder, sleep is a symptom, either sleeping too little or sleeping too much,” she said. “Often you’ll hear somebody say they’re having ruminating thoughts, they’re obsessing, they’re thinking about the same things over and over again, and often that keeps them from falling asleep. “People who are anxious tend to stay in their head, because it helps them avoid their emotions. As long as they’re thinking, they feel they’re doing something to prevent something bad from happening. And that disconnects them from their surroundings,” she continued. “And a lot of people who have anxiety also have depression, and depression brings about changes in appetite, loss of concentration, memory problems and, in severe cases, even suicide. You become isolated … you lose your sense of pleasure in life. And anxiety, when it’s untreated, when somebody feels it’s out of control, that can bring on depression.” And the fact that Guadagnino managed to keep his anxiety a secret for so long doesn’t surprise Varma one bit; after all, millions suffer from similar disorders, and more often than not, their friends and family aren’t even aware of it. Or, if they are, they’re not sure how they can help. “All psychiatric conditions are medical conditions, so in the way people have diabetes or high blood pressure, that needs to be taken seriously, they have real biological circumstances, so does anxiety or depression,” she continued. “It’s a medical disorder, and people really think it’s a mood, a phase that you’re in, a funk that you’re in, and you can just snap out of it. You can’t. Anxiety disorders are really an umbrella, and there’s seven or eight major categories that fall under that. People who have it are integrated amongst us … there are plenty of people that you’re working with that you don’t realize have it, because they seem so functional. And having seen previous episodes, I wouldn’t have realized [Guadagnino had a disorder] until he came forward.” Varma added that there are a variety of treatments available to those battling anxiety disorders — but the key is getting those with conditions to admit they need help. That’s always been the biggest battle, though now that Guadagnino has gone public, perhaps those like him will follow suit. “It’s really important to let people know that there’s no stigma in this,” Varma said. “There are millions of people suffering from this, and it’s treatable.” “Vinny knew he needed to make some changes and reach out for support from his family to feel better,” said Courtney Knowles of the Jed Foundation. “Taking those steps can be hard, but so many people like Vinny have found ways to manage their anxiety. Hopefully, his example will remove some of the stigma around these conditions, and inspire others to take action to feel better and improve their lives.” To learn more about Vinny’s story, or if you or a friend are dealing with issues like anxiety, stress or depression, visit Vinny.HalfOfUs.com.
