Jane Carrey Just Latest Famous Kid On ‘American Idol’ Posted: 23 Jan 2012 01:31 PM PST Shannon Magrane, Jordin Sparks and Nikko Smith also have bold-name dads.
For years, singers have done just about anything they could to get the attention the judges on “American Idol.” There have been wacky costumes, shameless flirtation with the panel and some truly horrible original songs. But one surefire way to pique the interest of Randy, Steven and J.Lo (not to mention Simon and Paula in the past) is to reveal in your bio that your dad is already a bold-faced name. The latest case-in-point is Jane Carrey, the 24-year-old daughter of actor Jim Carrey, who tried out for the show Sunday night. The judges enjoyed her rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About,” while former Fly Girl Jennifer Lopez remembered seeing baby Jane on the set of “In Living Color” when she shared the stage with Carrey. But she’s just the latest “Idol” wannabe to use her name to get in the door. Just last week, we met lanky Shannon Magrane, whose father was the starting pitcher in two games for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1987 World Series. Magrane is among a long list of athlete offspring who’ve given “Idol” a shot. In season seven, we briefly got to know Alyonka Larionov, daughter of former National Hockey League star Igor “The Professor” Larionov, who helped pave the way for Russian hockey players to join NHL teams back in the late 1980s. There was also season-four crooner Nikko Smith, son of Hall of Fame baseball player Ozzie Smith. “Being around my dad and him being in the spotlight kind of prepares you and you have an outlook on things that’s a little bit different, because you’ve been around celebrities and people in the spotlight,” Nikko told MTV News in 2007. But perhaps the biggest jock descendant to make it to the “Idol” stage is Jordin Sparks, the season-six winner whose father is former NFL cornerback Phillippi Sparks. The year she won “Idol,” Jordin recalled to MTV News taking pictures with her family for national magazines and seeing fans swarm her dad for autographs. “He actually told me the other day that when he would sign autographs, I would just be watching so intently,” she remembered. “He said it was really weird, because he was watching me [sign autographs] the other day, and now it’s all turned around.” It also helps to have some music-industry blood pumping through your veins. In season eight, that meant some extra shine for David Osmond, who made it to Hollywood Week that year thanks to his famous singing family’s pedigree and some very smooth vocals but flamed out due to laryngitis. Season-six contestant Sundance Head, son of “Treat Her Right” singer Roy Head, ended up in 13th place on the show. Before he surprised the political world by winning late Democratic stalwart Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat in 2010, Republican lawmaker Scott Brown’s basketball-playing daughter Ayla made it into the top 16 on the show in season five. Kanye West Takes Heat For Australian Festival Delay Posted: 23 Jan 2012 01:30 PM PST Fellow performers Soundgarden criticize West after his soundcheck bleeds into their set at Sunday’s Big Day Out festival.
It wasn’t a delay on par with his 2008 Bonnaroo debacle — when he took the stage at roughly 4:30 a.m. (and then nearly destroyed his MacBook Air in the aftermath) — but at Sunday’s Big Day Out festival in Australia, Kanye West was nearly 45 minutes late for his headlining slot. And, as you can imagine, folks weren’t thrilled to be kept waiting. According to reports, fans bided their time by breaking into numerous chants of “bullsh–” as they stood in the rain, and when West finally did appear, many wandered off to watch other acts like Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and My Chemical Romance. The Gold Coast Bulletin wrote that West blamed the delay on “sound problems” caused by the wet weather. While those chants were no doubt withering, West did manage to rebound and wow fans with a booming, ballerina-enhanced set. Unfortunately, he couldn’t impress fellow headliners Soundgarden, who were apparently less than pleased that his soundcheck bled into their set. “Sounds like there’s children playing music there, retarded children, retarded as in ‘held back,’ ” frontman Chris Cornell told the crowd, after West’s music was heard in between the band’s songs. “There’s no other word for it.” A spokesperson for Soundgarden did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment on the matter by press time. Aside from the acrimony, weather and delays, several Australian newspapers noted that the West-headlined Big Day Out Gold Coast did not sell out — the first time the fest had not been at capacity “since the 1990s.” Many attributed that to the fact that Kanye had also headlined Australia’s Splendor in the Grass fest less than six months ago. Daniel Radcliffe Hopes Next Role Will Be Poet Allen Ginsberg Posted: 23 Jan 2012 01:30 PM PST ‘I’m hoping to make this year just about film, film, film,’ ‘Woman in Black’ star tells MTV News.
While we are still anxiously awaiting the release of “The Woman in Black,” Daniel Radcliffe‘s first big post-”Harry Potter” film, it’s never too early to start thinking about what other projects the young superstar will be considering after “Black” opens. When MTV News caught up with Radcliffe recently, we asked him to give us some clues as to what we might expect from him in the next year, specifically whether he’d officially signed on to a new film following the release of “Black.” “Closer and getting closer every day, but not anything confirmed yet, unfortunately,” Radcliffe said of his 2012 working schedule and several film roles he’s considering. “Hopefully I’ll definitely have three weeks off in February and then shortly after that, I would hopefully be making a film and it would hopefully be over here,” he said of his wishes to continue working Stateside, following his run on Broadway in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” “That would be an entirely new experience for me; I’ve never filmed in America. I’d really like to do that, with an American crew and have that experience,” he said. “I’m hoping to make this year just about film, film, film and then maybe get back onstage maybe in the next two years.” Radcliffe was cagey about exactly which film roles he’s considering, but one he did cop to is portraying poet Allen Ginsberg in the independent film “Kill Your Darlings,” which is about how Ginsberg and fellow Beat Generation icons Jack Kerouac and Lucien Carr first met. “It’s one of the things that’s on the table absolutely. It would be amazing and I’m very, very enthused for that script and that young director,” he said of the John Krokidas-helmed project, which is also set to star Elizabeth Olsen, who recently raved about Radcliffe’s talent and her excitement to work with him in “Darlings.” “It’s an independent film, it’s welcome to the world of independent film — from one day to the next it could happen or not happen. Until I’m there on the set, I’m not going to say anything about it.” Would Daniel Radcliffe do well in the role of Allen Ginsberg? Tell us what you think in the comments! Related Videos |
