DWTS 14 - Week 7
Just walking out in their costumes is interesting. Quite a variety.
Rumba for Katherine and Mark. She's a classical singer and knows the music, which makes her feel good but not sure how helpful with the dancing she said. Last year she sang during this competition. I don't care what Sam says, I hope she wins. He thinks it's DWTS 101 if she does. The audience votes, which always messes things up. At least this season, they have that dance-off for the bottom two, and the judges choose from there. I'm glad. Mark had on some kind of cape which was removed and now he's shirtless. Fit, hairless torso and arms. Maybe I'm weird, but I'd rather see men dancing with shirts on. It just seems half-dressed to me. Shirts could be unbuttoned down to a point or maybe a vest - that's good. At the beach or in bed as little clothing as possible, but not in public dancing or whatever. This was an elegant, classic rumba. I was distracted by the semi-nakedness of Mark (not in a good way) and need to rewind and watch her dance. She looked like a Greek goddess. Score: 27
I don't know what to think about the Argentine tango Maks and Melissa performed. It seemed erratic and sort of antagonistic. I think it was supposed to be, though. Melissa didn't have the control she needed for the lifts and some of the footwork. Maks has a foot injury and brought his brother Val in to rehearse with Melissa. Maks told her Val is nicer. The judges said the tempo of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" was difficult to dance to but that she didn't do that well. This was mostly a criticism of Maks's choreography but her dance quality wasn't there. Even I noticed it. They had some difficult lifts, which were amazing for someone who has recovered from a broken back! Score: 21 Yikes!
Double elimination next week. Have they done this before? Probably. I don't have the most reliable memory about some things.
All these injuries! His ankle hurts, but William and Cheryl danced a graceful Viennese waltz while Jackie Evancho sang "Ave Maria." How does that voice come from that little girl?!! Can't tell his ankle is a problem, but Cheryl choreographed the dance in order not to aggravate it. The audience went wild. Does William have a wife and two children? The camera panned to whom that might have been twice. Guess I could google it, but I don't really care. It was a very pretty dance with passion and elegance. Score: 27
Roshon was discouraged by being in the bottom two last week. Val came in and helped him with his posture and manliness technique required for their Argentine tango. Roshon and Chelsie looked more like kids doing a grown-up dance, but they did the moves and managed to pull this off. The judges said he improved and did well. Score: 25
Peta is challenging Donald to compete at a higher level. He's so competitive and wants to give more like the judges challenged him to do. Donald and Peta danced a Viennese waltz while Vittoria Grigolo sang. Elegant, graceful dancing! High praise from the judges. Score: 27
Derek got a little frustrated during rehearsal, and Maria felt it. Derek and Maria performed a paso doble, and her personality isn't naturally suited to it. Maybe Derek treated her differently during rehearsal to get her in the mood. She did really well. It was intense and passionate. The music matched it. This was a vampire theme with Maria's biting Derek on the neck at the end - fangs and all. The judges loved it! So did I! Score: 30 Wow!!! First perfect score!! Maria is a contender!
Jaleel and Kym are trying to keep up the momentum from last week when they got two 10's and a 9. Their Viennese waltz was beautiful - smooth and romantic. Len said he liked it enough not to be cruel but not enough to be kind. Hmmm Bruno said it wasn't as good as it could be but was very nice. Carrie Ann said not to lose his confidence and to be aware of technique. Score: 24
OMG! Karina and Tristan danced while Jackie Evancho sang. Karina was barely wearing anything but was covered with see-through black I love watching the pros dance together but also really enjoy seeing the progress people make who haven't danced professionally.
Team dances now ...
Team Tango: Maria & Derek, Elizabeth & Mark, Jaleel & Kym, and Roshon & Chelsie. Intense and precise and quick! Score: 27 Mixed reviews from judges (10, 8, 9)
Team Paso Doble: Donald & Peta, Melissa & Maks, and William & Cheryl. Maks said the women were blonde, brunette, and redhead - woo! William didn't want to dance shirtless because he wanted to show they could dance, so they compromised and wore open bolero jackets the first half and then took them off the second half. The audience went wild! The judges praised their performance so much I thought they'd get all 10's but no. Their score was 26, one less than the other team's. The audience went wild again for a different reason.
Melissa didn't do as well tonight and had the lowest score. I'm sure this does not please Maks. Depending on how people vote, I'd say Melissa or Roshon might go home. We'll see.

Take This Tune
My pal Jamie over at Duward Discussion has brought back a great meme called Take This Tune. It's easy to play. Jamie provides a musical prompt each week, usually a video with the song lyrics. The task is to write something inspired by the song or something in the lyrics.
Jamie put the meme on hiatus a year ago February. I'm glad to see it back and I hope some of you will play along once in awhile. I've always considered this game to be a great way to combine music and writing. Or music and photography. Or music and more music.
You get my drift.
The prompt for this week is Feels Like Home, a song from the Randy Newman musical Faust.
Jamie has impeccable timing. My grandmother passed 26 years ago...21 April 1986. Jump in the Wayback Machine with me now and I'll tell you a little bit about my Gram. This essay was originally posted in 2007, and again in 2011. Oddly enough, that 2011 post was for another Take This Tune prompt.
When I was about 10, my parents divorced and my younger sister and I were raised by our single mom. We lived about an hour and a half from my grandmother, and so we made lots of weekend trips over to the San Francisco Bay Area to visit. They were like mini vacations for us. We would laugh and sing in the car during the entire drive.
I remember the time we tried to take a short cut through Hayward to get to the San Mateo Bridge. We ended up lost! If there was a way to lose a large body of water like a bay and a huge bridge...we found it! But such were our little adventures.
Editor's note: I have inherited that trait. Just after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, while driving late at night in downtown San Francisco, I managed to lose the Bay Bridge. But that's a story for another trip in the Wayback Machine.
Anyway, that shortcut turned out to be the best thing because we passed right by a 7-Eleven convenience store on a side street. Once we figured out the short cut, we almost always used it and Mom would give in to our begging and stop for Slurpees. Not always, but more often than not. If she didn't, we'd have to wait until we got to Gram's.
My sister and I were Slurpee-holics in those days.
Gram was the best. She was a fireplug of a redhead and she was so much fun when I was a kid. She'd take us down to Tanforan Mall in San Bruno. We'd have adventures in parking. She'd drive and drive around the side lot next to the Sears entrance to the mall, waiting for "her" spot to open up right near the front. My sister and I would play scout from the backseat, keeping an eye on the entrance and watching for people heading to their cars. And then, just like that, Gram's spot would open up and she'd swing the big Caddy in like a pro.
Honestly! Can you imagine a woman all of 4'9" wrangling a huge 1970's model Cadillac around a parking lot?
After our triumph in parking, we'd walk into the mall through Sears. This was my first experience with any large shopping mall. Gram would always take us to the toy store and the pet store. Sometimes she'd need to stop at a shoe store, and she always picked the one next to Waldenbooks so we could browse while she got her shoes. Sometimes we'd get a prize for being patient...a new Hardy Boys book for me and a Trixie Belden or Bobbsey Twins for my sis.
Then we'd head over to the Walgreen's. Now back in those days at Tanforan, the Walgreen's was more than just a place where Gram could get her necessaries, as she called them. Once in awhile we'd get new coloring books and the small boxes of new Crayola crayons. Of course we'd lust after the big box of 64 with the built-in sharpener, but that was always reserved for a holiday or birthday gift.
But the Walgreen's...it was a drug store like it is today, but it also had a cafe/restaurant! My sister and I were always on our best behavior with limited fidgeting and whining during the shopping phase of our outing, because we knew that after all that good behavior we'd get grilled cheese and hot fudge sundaes at the Walgreen's cafe/restaurant.
The best thing though...the ultimate...the grandest thing about going to Gram's was that she lived around the corner from a 7-Eleven. Can you imagine anything better for a couple of Slurpee-holics? After a day of racing Big Wheels down the big hill, or building Legos and Tinker Toys in the backyard, or drawing and coloring on the big dining room table, Gram would hand us a dollar and send us around the corner for Slurpees.
Yeah...back then you could get 2 Slurpees for a buck.
My grandmother has been gone for more than 25 years now. My grandfather just sold the house this year so he could move into a smaller place with more immediate onsite care and attention. I'm a little sad about that, but all things change.
My aunt and uncle still live one block over from that house. So now it's a two block walk to get to that same 7-Eleven.
So what feels like home, now that the old house is no longer part of our family?
Memories.
Memories of my redheaded spitfire Gram, and Caddy wrangling in a parking lot, and Walgreen's grilled cheese and hot fudge sundaes, and Crayola crayons, and getting lost as an adventure, and Slurpees.
Memories are always home.

Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs Book
Of course, I didn't leave the boutique empty handed. No...I didn't buy the Suship. I bought an infinitely cheaper but well worth it book to ad to my Vuitton Collection - The Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs companion book to the exhibit. Actually, this has been on hold for me for a couple of weeks now but I just haven't found the time to pick it up until today. And boy was I surprised because the cover/s were in itself a delight. First you have the outer packaging which has a dot drawing of both Vuitton and Jacobs. Then you open it to a cut out sleeve of the book's title. From there you could already see the gold foil peeping through. As you slide it out from its case, you are blinded by the gold hardcover. I scanned a few pages and I fell head over heels in LVoe with this particular photo of Marc which instantly made this my favourite of all Vuitton publications to date. LVoe it!!!
Louis Vuitton LVook-See
Ahhhh...the beauty of having a local Louis Vuitton boutique is that you can see the windows as it changes from season to season. This Spring, the display had a 'Hunger Games' theme to my eyes. A multitude of feathered arrows seem to target the bag within. The illusion is spectacular especially from a distance as the colours seem to pulsate before you.
I didn't have much a LVook-see because my SA was already ending her shift and I didn't want to linger. On the table, they had two Monogram Desire Lockits. The nylon jacquard didn't do much for me but the lining was impressive. It's a collector piece most definitely but not something that you can use everyday. Next to it was the Denim Beach tote which was fabulous due to the combination of the fabric and suede trimmings.
Encased in glass was the Monogram Denim Pochette Round and a Monogram Bouclettes (not shown) which was totally high up on the shelf. I really didn't pay attention to them because I had my eye on the...
....Suship. Crafted out of the most buttery, soft leather, it was too precious to even play around with. The silver locking mechanism was a nice touch and how the bag opens up. The lining is so luxurious. This bag is strictly a NO PENS or PENCILS bag. It was amazing and I did stick my head into it to take a whiff of that new leather smell. Simply LVoe, LVoe, LVoe!!!
